What Drew in Viewers to 24?

The television show 24 showed its last ever episode in May but that doesn't appear to be the end of things. With a feature length television movie already under its belt, it looks like the story isn't yet over for Jack Bauer and co - a cinematic feature is planned so everybody's favourite special agent can head off on one last adventure.

The popularity of 24 has led many people to wonder what exactly it was that made it so addictive, but any fan of the show will easily tell you why: the adrenaline. 24 is so named because each of the 24 episodes is written to represent an hour in a single day, so episode 1 covers the first hour, episode 8 the eighth, and so on. In this way, the aspect of timing becomes a crucial part of the action as characters have to rush to adhere to deadlines that may be a few episodes in the future but in reality aren't very far off at all. The idea of following Jack Bauer's actions of the course of a full day also adds in an extra realness aspect, which pulls viewers into the false belief that what they are seeing is far more accurate and realistic than any other TV show.

Many fans have even said that they've spent almost an entire day watching a full series of 24 - with commercial breaks taken out, every episode is actually around 45 minutes long rather than a full hour - simply because they couldn't switch it off. For a show that lasted eight seasons following the exact same concept, that is a very impressive achievement. While some viewers may feel somewhat cheated that each episode is not a true representation of an hour in real time, they can be abated by the fact that the writers cleverly manufactured the script so that the commercial breaks take place just as the action turns mundane, for example, the characters are travelling somewhere.

Following the conclusion of the show's eighth and final season, a feature film has been written which will condense the show's 24 hour format into just two hours. Whether or not it will be pulled off to the same effect remains to be seen but, for now, fans of the show and newcomers can keep their addictions sated by catching the show on HD television in order to ensure they don't miss a single clue.
