Leather Bound Books- Different Types of Leather Bound Books
Books may be bound in a variety of different materials. Some are paperback while some are hardback. Some hardback books are covered in cloth, some in leather, and some in a combination of the two. Leather bound books tend to be the most durable and therefore the most valuable, as they remain in better condition for a longer period of time. They can also often be very beautiful with intricate designs decorating their covers and spines.
Leather bound books may be grouped into three categories: full binding, half-binding, and quarter binding. Full binding means the spine and the outer boards are completely covered in leather. This can often cause a book to become more valuable as it ages, simply due to the fact that the leather stands up to wear and tear better than other materials. Half binding means that the spine and the outside corners are covered in leather, the sides being covered in paper or cloth. Quarter binding indicates that only the spine is covered in leather.
There are also different types of leather that cover leather bound books. Books with rich, deep colours are covered in Morocco leather. This is grained goat skin that holds dye well, allowing for the rich colours. Smooth coverings, with no grain that can be perceived, are typically Calf leather. While the natural colour is a pale beige, it may also be dyed and holds colour well. Vellum is the final possibility. This is the skin of a calf that, while not tanned, it is specially treated and de-greased. It is smooth and pale coloured. While paper and fabric can make for a lovely covering, neither are as durable as the leather options.
Leather bound books can often lend themselves to great beauty. Intricate gold lettering and designs grace the covers of many of these books, often increasing the value. It is true, however, that a book should not be judged by its cover. If the leather is intact and the book is in good condition, it can still be very valuable without detailed ornamentation. Books with full binding tend to be the most expensive on the front end though, so they are naturally worth more later on as a general rule.
