Royal Tyrrell Museum Review - The Dinosaur Museum in Drumheller, AB - Is it Worth the Visit? Part 2

This is Part 2 of the Royal Tyrrell Museum Review...

Special Exhibitions

Each year a special exhibit is featured at the Royal Tyrrell Museum. The first is called "Alberta Unearthed" and is the museums special 25th anniversary exhibit that celebrates the people, places and specimens that have helped make it Canada's dinosaur museum. In this gallery, there was a beautifully preserved skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex called the "Black Beauty". It was found in Alberta, Canada by two high school students in the summer of 1980. Since then, it has traveled all over the world. It is definitely something to see. Secondly the Triassic Giant is the world's largest known marine reptile measuring 21 meters long. This exhibit is only on display in 2010. Then there is the "I think..." exhibit which talks about Charles Darwin and ideas about evolution.

Programs

A wide variety of fun, creative and educational programs for every age are offered at the Royal Tyrrell Museum that bring the prehistoric past to life. The Dino adventure hour is for ages 3 to 6 where kids can work in a realistic indoor dig site and make a cool craft. Fossil casting is for ages 4+ where kids can make their own fossil replica. Junior Dinosaur Explorers is for ages 7-12 and kids can excavate in a realistic quarry and participate in a badlands dinosaur adventure. One of the programs that I found very interesting is the dig experience where you can use real tools and techniques of palaeontology as a member of an excavation team working in the badlands. Uncover replicas of dinosaur bones, map a quarry, make a field jacket and learn to read the stories fossils tell in this 90 minute program. This is for ages 10+. There are many other programs for all ages such as Seven wonders of the badlands, Pond Scum, Passion for the past, Alberta unearthed and secrets of the lost quarry. There are also a lot of great camping programs available at the Royal Tyrrell Museum such as junior, senior and family science camp. Camp ins is another great program that lets families, groups or organizations a chance to snore with the dinosaurs, meet a live reptile dig for fossils or create a fossil replica. Then they get to see what happens when the lights go out at the museum.

School programs

A field trip to the Royal Tyrrell Museum would be a fun and educational experience for students and there are many great programs to register for. Curriculum based programming in palaeontology, geology, biology and science are offered for students and teachers from kindergarten to Grade 12. If you are unable to make the trip to the badlands, the museum can bring real fossils right to your class. Credited courses and Distance learning are also available.

So was it worth the trip? Is the Royal Tyrrell Museum as great as it's hyped up to be? Well, first of all, I was very impressed with the price. Kids under 7 were free, and it was only $10 per adult, so it is very affordable. Secondly, if you love history, then this is definitely a place you will want to visit. My wife is the history lover in our family, me not so much, but I was fascinated with the amazing displays and history of these great animals that once roamed our earth. Thirdly, I was very impressed with the amount of educational programs available. It makes the whole experience interesting for even young children. The museum truly has one of the richest collections in the world. You can take a stroll through the badlands and it makes you feel like you are going on a trip back in time. I highly recommend a visit to this incredible museum and I can officially say that it is definitely worth visiting!
