Dragon Statues

The Symbolic Meaning of Chinese Dragon Statues

Chinese dragon statues have been associated with the Orient more so than any other figurines or statues. Although mostly thought of as fire-breathing, they can also be depicted breathing ice or poison. For this reason, the dragon is considered a creator and a destroyer. Dragon figurines have different meanings depending on their origin. The Chinese dragon is associated with goodwill or kindness. The Asian dragon is typically associated with water, as in the Japanese dragon that is usually portrayed as a water serpent. The word "dragon" is actually a combination of two words meaning "huge snake or serpent" and "see clearly." This represents the ability to see the entire picture, including the future. In the Orient, the dragon usually possesses a supernatural power or magic of some sort and dragon figurines are thought to bring longevity and wisdom. In contrast, the European dragon is considered to have an evil or harmful influence. The myths associated with dragons have fascinated people for a thousand years. The origination of these myths may have come from the skeletons of dinosaurs that were believed to be a form of dragon when they roamed the earth. Chinese dragon statues usually have the body of a lizard or a snake-like creature with two pairs of lizard legs. The dragon figurines from Europe typically have wings. Both have very large eyes associated with attentively watching over things. The dragon is quite popular in China and a symbol of Chinese emperors was the five-clawed dragon. When used in feng shui dragon figurines are representative of "yang." This is the masculine element in the Chinese philosophy that is the opposite of "yin." The two complement each other are thought to exist in every element of life. Where they are placed affects success and prosperity. Since dragons are also representative of the east, the best placement in the home is on the east side. This brings the occupants the prosperity and success desired. Pregnant Chinese dragon statues are considered an omen of expansion, progress and future growth. The number nine is also symbolized by dragon figurines in Chinese tradition. This number is a lucky number and is believed to attract good luck to those who have a dragon containing this number. Since the figurines of dragons used in feng shui are a symbol of activity, they should not be placed in a room that is used for relaxation and rest, such as a bedroom. Considered one of the most powerful symbols in feng shui, the dragon's breath is chi, the energy and life force of the universe. Throughout the years, the dragon has been a symbol of harmony, well-being, fortune, honor and luck for many cultures. Chinese dragon statues are often holding a pearl, which symbolizes victory and success in career and achievement of wealth.
