Prepaid Credit Cards Provide the Convenience of Plastic for a Child Without a Risk of Debt
A prepaid card looks like a credit card, but works differently. That's how using one won't get you into dept - no matter how tempted you are to max-out!
You can use it everywhere MasterCard or Visa is accepted, but you can only spend up to the available balance on your card. With a prepaid card, you load funds onto your Card and use that money to make purchases and get cash - you are not borrowing money from a bank or other financial institution.
Yes. Your prepaid credit card can be used anywhere MasterCard is accepted, and that's including ATM's. The cardholder signs for purchases and gets a receipt. Unlike a credit card, though, each purchase is deducted from the pre-paid balance on the card.
Have you heard people talk in the past about unsecured cards? Prepaid credit cards are very similar to unsecured credit cards and can indeed be used anywhere bank credit cards, MasterCard or Visa credit cards, or debit cards can be used. The difference is that the prepaid card acts more like a debit card.
You deposit money into the account and you can use it yourself, and very conveniently you can give your child one. He or she cannot bankrupt you! They can only use the amount paid in, plus possibly with some a small pre-agreed amount. There is no need to worry about them going over the limit and you can track how much money you and they are spending on a monthly basis. An additional bonus is in knowing that your child is learning how to manage their money.
One of the major reasons that we are all suffering so much from th credit crunch and recession is that so many of us have been unable to repay our loans as our income and repayment costs have risen. As we have all found out to our cost, our bank credit card can exceed the balance in the checking account if it is linked to the account.
The result has been over-limit fees which to rapidly accumulate. A bank credit card, if it is not tied to the checking account, is reliant upon credit scores. If your child has not established a credit rating, then he or she can be turned down. Each time a lender runs a credit card application, the credit score can be harmed and lowered. This perpetuates the cycle of applying and then the subsequent denial, based on the credit scores.
With a prepaid credit card, you are extended a credit line based on one of your most solid assets... your actual cash on hand. It works much the same as depositing money into a checking account and using checks to make purchases, but with a prepaid credit card you stop spending the minute your cash is gone... no 'bounced checks', as it were.
Needles to say, the benefits are all too readily apparent. You have the spending power and convenience associated with checks and credit cards, without all the negative fees and sky-high interest rates.
I can hear you saying; "How can I open one right away!"
The answer is that a prepaid credit card account is opened by depositing money into that account, much in the same way you would make a deposit to open a checking or savings account. Once you have money in your account, you're issued a prepaid credit card that can be used anywhere one would use a regular credit card. The best part of the prepaid credit card is that you can charge to your heart's content and you won't be in debt. The money is yours and once it's gone, you can't spend any more until you make another deposit. There are no bills and no interest charges. It's the same principle as using a debit card linked to a savings or checking account.
