Not Looking for a Visit From the Tooth Fairy!
When we were children, we longed for the day when we awoke to find a dime, quarter, or even silver dollar under our pillow. We spent days conjuring up ways to remove teeth that weren’t even ready to come out just so we could get a visit from the Tooth Fairy.
As adults, however? Not so much, especially after seeing the movie Darkness Falls, where the tooth fairy is big, scary monster!
We greatly prefer having – and keeping – our “big girl” and “big boy” teeth for as long as possible. We want to play sports like hockey or touch football, where getting hit in the mouth is part of the game. Is it too much to ask that we still have a great smile afterwards?
Thanks to modern cosmetic dental procedures, that is not too much to ask! Let’s say you get knocked in the mouth and one of your teeth gets loosened or partially dislodged. Dentists refer to this as an extruded tooth. If the nerves or blood vessels inside the tooth are still connected, it is possible that the tooth can be saved. A temporary orthodontic bracket might be used to hold the tooth in place while it heals.
If the tooth's nerve and blood vessels are damaged, however, your cosmetic dentist may have to do a root canal. The canal of a tooth is the hollow center that protects nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. This canal runs from the top of the tooth down into the root of the tooth imbedded in the jawbone. That is how the teeth are fed by the body’s circulatory system. (Pretty amazing, isn’t it?)
A root canal is, simply, removing the damaged root of the tooth and filling and sealing the remains to deter infection. Once that is done, the space is fitted for a replacement tooth known as a crown. A crown is a porcelain replica of the damaged tooth and, once it has been set in place using dental cement, will work just as well as the original, if not better.
So, as with any good story, the moral is … play sports, wrestle with your kids, take up boxing! You can rest secure in the knowledge that, should you get hit in the mouth and wind up with an extruded or damaged tooth, your cosmetic dentist can give you great new teeth and Tooth Fairy never needs to know.
