How To Collect Figurines
Mankind has been collecting things since the beginning. It is believed that early man collected the shiny rocks and teeth of slain or fallen animals. And since that time the collection of certain items always seemed to take on a "value" of sorts.
It has always been about; who has it and how much he wants for the item. This was true even when the currency was simple bartering. When currencies began to be used assigning value to things took on a whole new meaning. Not all collectors of figurines are in it for the potential profit some are collected for their beauty and still others are being collected because the person just happens to like the work of a certain artist.
Whatever the reason you are considering collecting figurines. There are things that are important to do to keep your collection in order. Read on to find a few tips to becoming a good collector of figurines.
1. Decide on a type of figurine that you would like to collect. Some people collect small porcelain fairies, some unicorns and still others who collect a hodgepodge of items. Most collections have a central theme however and this makes it easier for the collector to be on the look out for new additions.
2. Knowing why you want to collect the item helps. If you are collecting for a possible investment then you will need to study about the articles you are considering to learn all that you can. This will help you make the best decisions when adding to the collection.
3. Locate Books or a website that is devoted to the figurine you will be collecting. Today a lot of people show off their collections online and you can get a good feel for what is in store by checking some of these out.
4. Check auction sites and the local stores that sell the types of items you are collecting. It makes a difference if you have chosen to collect new items or antiques. It does make a difference, if the "Antiques Roadshow" has taught the public anything is to not discount the value of resale shops, estate and yard sales. There are some figurines that have been handed down in families that are not even seen as having value that you could get for a very small investment.
5. Catalog your items from the start. When you get ready to sell or trade an item it will help if you have a written record to go by. Collection can eventually become very large. Where you store the items have to carefully cataloged to make accessing them easier when the time comes. It is also a good thing to have when you insure a collection.
