CIRNO DAY BONUS: GREAT FAIRY WARS ENGLISH PATCH!!!!!!
A Nutritionist's Morning After Detox
On Saturday, I attended a beautiful wedding (despite the weather) of some dear friends of ours. As with many wedding celebrations, alcohol was flowing and people were merrily toasting to the happy couple throughout the evening.
I am not a big drinker as you would expect from a nutritionist, but a couple of generous glasses of wine were sipped throughout the evening. I am quite small and alcohol does seem to propel northbound. This fairy was feeling a little flushed!
Once I'd floated home with my fruit fly, I poured myself a large glass of warm water and sliced up an entire lemon which was then popped into the glass. This was to soothe my liver during its overnight shift of detoxifying all the toxins with which I had been tormenting it throughout the evening.
Rewind to the day leading up to the wedding celebration, I had ensured that I had plenty of quality proteins in my meals - some mackerel, chickpeas and eggs and soldiers for breakfast. Amino acids that make up proteins are required for effective detoxification. I had also indulged my body in plenty of lush leaves like watercress, spinach and cabbage which supply more shots of sulphur, B vitamins, antioxidants and magnesium which are further essentials for liver support. So my insides were supplied with plenty of assistance before I'd taken a sip of sauvignon.
The next day I woke up bright and breezy as ever. No headache, no nausea, no 'morning-after' tell tale signs at all! But I was about to indulge my temple in some TLC to ensure that any self inflicted poison would not interfere with my inner harmony...
First of all, let's clarify why. The liver is at the epicentre of your health and wellbeing. If you are swimming with toxins then you will be looking and feeling significantly under-par. Your liver houses a big chunk of your immune system, and when it is burdened with toxins and chemicals, you will become more prone to falling ill from the omnipotent bug brigade. My liver expresses its frustrations and stressful workload on my skin, much like many other people. I will get a few little blemishes which sprout up like mushrooms on a clean cut lawn. Yes, even a nutritionist falls down sometimes. No, not literally. It wasn't THAT bad!
If your liver is not provided with sufficient levels of support then it becomes weakened and less able to do its job by dealing with toxins efficiently. The fact that I was unaffected the day after a naughty alcohol mini-splurge demonstrates that my liver is sitting pretty and able to deal with obstacles with ease.
And I aim to keep it that way! So here was my Sunday liver support scheme...
Once I had jumped up out of bed, I headed into the kitchen for my usual morning brew of hot water with fresh lemon slices. I added a little cider vinegar as well, just to help stimulate my digestive juices as I was absolutely famished and my tummy was whispering for its breakfast!
I then took a 30ml shot of pure aloe vera juice. Aloe contains a unique sugar compound called acemannan which improves metabolism of the body's cells and so speeds up the process of toxic elimination. It also works wonders to heal and maintain the health of your gut wall, which alcohol notoriously aggravates.
I then went about preparing my morning meal. I opened the fridge and grabbed a pot of hummus, a generous handful of watercress and some sweet cherry tomatoes which were grown in my mum's garden. I plonked them on a plate and took a packet of rice cakes out of the cupboard.
As I settle on the sofa in front of some indulgent Sunday morning TV, I begin munching on my deliciously low maintenance meal which I rely on in times of hunger emergency! No cornflakes or Pop tarts in this household!
To top off my breakfast, I turn to my best friend the food blender. In I pop a couple of carrots, a handful of radishes, an apple, 2 beetroots and a few grapes. I top it off with a sprinkling of chlorophyll and juice away! Now this is enough to invigorate even the grouchiest morning head. So my boyfriend was handed a glass as well, with a straw and a smile.
I sip water throughout the day as usual, and enjoy a mug of dandelion root tea which has brilliant 'detox' abilities.
Lunch is salmon, served with a mash of sweet potato, alongside steamed spinach and fresh mange touts lovingly grown on my parent's vegetable patch. I indulge my post-meal sweet tooth with a stick of licorice and a couple of squares of dark chocolate. My idol, Audrey Hepburn famously spoke of her belief in a daily dose of chocolate in a bid to beat the 'mean blues.' I follow her wise words, although I don't have any mean blues to melt away, I just love chocolate!
A pot of dandelion tea punctuates my afternoon, and my evening meal consists of a chickpea, barley and coconut milk stir fry. I boil the barley in coconut water with a dash of organic vegetable stock powder. In a large pan I pour a can of chickpeas over oil, 3 crushed garlic cloves and grated fresh ginger root. I then add bean sprouts, cabbage, onion, carrots and cherry tomatoes, with a shake of turmeric. I combine the lot and hey presto, a meal that on paper would disappoint my man, but on the palate makes him return for seconds.
A big mug of peppermint tea hydrates my evening antics and then an early night tops of my temple spring clean day!
Drink, eat and be merry but always take good care of your liver and it will return the favour, believe me - I'm a nutritionist!
