The Four Elements
Many cultures and philosophies have used for centuries a set of classical elements which represent the essential parts of which everything is made of and although there are several approaches to these elements, most worldviews recognize air, water, earth and fire as being the four elements. Most philosophers and scientists argue that all matters are formed by air, water, earth and fire. These elements surround us all the time and the existence of the human race and of any living beings would not be possible if one of these elements wouldn’t exist. To conclude, these elements are essential for any form of life.
The Four Elements are associated with certain physical properties and they are also correlated to certain emotions, temperaments, directions, colors and tastes. Furthermore, every person is governed by one of these elements according to the zodiac sign on which he is born and this sign influences the personality of the individual. As you can notice, we live in a world where everything is organized up to the smallest detail and the main role of these elements is to propagate life.
Water is one of the main four elements in ancient philosophy, often being associated with emotions and intuition. Water is also believed to represent wisdom, the soul and femininity while in the Chinese Taoist culture it is the symbol of intelligence and wisdom. This element manifests itself through rivers, oceans, lakes and rain and the physical property assigned to it is cohesion. The Four Elements have several meanings in different cultures but one thing is certain, they are all vital for our existence and well-being.
Air is another element found in the ancient philosophy and it stands for communication, intelligence, psychic powers, and masculinity; in Taoism the element of air is excluded, being replaced by the qi which is a considered a force and not an element. The manifestations of air are the wind, the sky, the clouds and even the birds which are thought to personify this element. Air is associated with motion, the soul and the breath of life. The Four Elements need air because this is the element which carries away troubles and brings positive thoughts.
The Four Elements cannot exist one without the other and the next element we should mention is earth; earth is the home and the origin of the human race, being frequently associated to practicality, restraint and the sensual aspects of life. Earth manifests itself through plants, mountains, forests, caves and gardens and it is considered fertile and stable, solid and firm. All aspects of life take place on earth so there is no surprise that earth belongs to the four elements.
We cannot conclude this short review about The Four Elements without mentioning fire which is connected to strong will and energy. Fire is a dual element, which creates and destroys, but its importance for the development of civilization is indisputable. This element is associated with energy, assertiveness and passion and it represents creativity and an active force which has the power to create and animate things. The manifestations of this element are the sun, lighting, volcanoes, lava and all forms of life.
