Fly fishing methods

Fly-Fishing

There are two fly-fishing methods, dry-fly fishing and wet-fly fishing.

A dry-fly is an artificial fly designed to imitate a small creature such as a beetle or fly floating on the water.

Some artificial flies have natural buoyancy and float on the water without any special treatments but most flies have to be treated in some way to prevent them from sinking.

The usual method is to coat the flies with a floatant, which come either as a gel or spray. This prevents the fly becoming waterlogged. They have to be applied sparingly so as not to clog the fly's delicate hackles.

On rivers the insects that make up a large part of a fish's diet are the ones we wish to imitate. A favourite of trout and grayling is the mayfly sometimes called upwings.

Having decided on a fly that closely resembles the trout or grayling's natural food we attach this fly (just one single fly) to our line and cast it so that it lands exactly in front of the feeding fish.

To be a successful fly-fisher you need to spend some time observing the water and taking note of which flies the trout are feeding on. You should also take into account the strength of the current.

During the warmer summer months the trouts main food will be a species of upwinged dun(Mayfly). These are olive coloured insects which have mated, laid their eggs and died. Their bodies float down the river with the current and provide an excellent meal for the patrolling fish.

To tempt the fish onto your hook you need an artificial fly that resembles these insects as closely as possible. An examlpe of such a fly is a size 14 or 16 CDC Dun.

Where you position yourself on the bank is important. You should stand slightly downstream of the fish, almost at right-angles to the direction they are travelling.

Cast the fly so that it lands upstream and in line with the feeding fish. Then allow the fly to drift down with the current and into the fish's line of vision.

The fly must move in a way that appears natural to the fish. When you cast allow some slack in the line, otherwise the fly will be dragged across the water in a most unnatural manner which will frighten the fish.

For dry-fly fishing on a river you will need : An 8-9ft rod: a 4-6 weight floating double-taper line; a 10ft tapering leader with a 3lb bs tippet. Flies you might like to try:- Hare's ear, Black Gnat, CDC Dun, Blue-Winged Olive.
