Why Beachcombing Is Needed For A Healthy Life

I really enjoy beachcombing and hunting fossils.  As I am walking along the beach listening to the sounds of seagulls screaming against the roaring surf, soaking up the warm sun, I look down and find a sharks tooth gleaming in the sand!  What is there not to enjoy about this!  For the health conscious, walking a few miles up and down a beach is also a good way to lose weight.

I like hunting fossils at Myrtle Beach, Edisto Beach and Hunting Island all in South Carolina.  I was able to go to Myrtle Beach this past January for a few days.  I found quite a few sharks teeth, some petrified wood and several fossilized clams.

It is not too difficult to see a sharks tooth lying in the sand, you just need to take your time as you walk the beach.  Finding the fossilized clams are a little more difficult.  They look similar to just a black or gray rock; in fact, I pick up many rocks thinking they could be a clam.  When you do find one, it is very easy to identify – it looks just like a closed clam shell!  I have pictures of some fossilized clams on my website.  The petrified wood looks just like bits of wood only black in color.  It is interesting to pick up what appears to be a bit of wood but it is as hard as a rock.

If this sounds like a boring hobby, on your next trip to the coast, give it a try and I think you will be amazed at how relaxing yet exciting fossil hunting is.
