Menstrual Problems Causes and Symptoms and Treatment for Menstrual Cycle Problems

Some women have very little trouble with their menstrual cycles, but others face a monthly ordeal. An array of stressful symptoms—irritability, mood swings, headaches, bloating, water retention, soreness of the breasts—may occur with premenstrual syndrome. Periods can be irregular and troubled, with cramping, menorrhagia (abnormally heavy flow), and various discomforts.

Causes and Symptoms of Menstrual Problems
Premenstrual Tension and Menstrual Cramps: A few days before menstruation, some women become nervous and irritable. They suffer from depression, headaches, fullness in the breasts, insomnia, and swelling in the lower extremities. This may be due to a hormonal imbalance. These problems cease within twenty-four hours of the start of the menstrual flow.

Dysmenorrhoea: Painful menstruation, as it is called in medical parlance, is a common condition. The pain may be felt either two or three days before or immediately before or during the flow. This may also be due to a hormonal imbalance.

Amenorrhoea or Stoppage of Menstrual Flow: This is natural during pregnancy and at the menopause, but abnormal at any other time. It denotes a debilitated and devitalised condition of the body. The main causes contributing towards this condition are anaemia, worry, grief, fright, or other serious emotional disturbances; malformation of the womb; tuberculosis; displacement of the womb; and debility, especially after a serious illness.

Menorrhagia or Excessive Menstrual Flow: This is common in some women. A variety of causes may be responsible for this trouble, including fibroids.

How Do Herbs Help to Treat Menstruation Problems and Menstruation Symptoms?
Specific herbs are used to treat different menstruation problems.
For example the following menstrual irregularities and menstrual symptoms can be treated using the following herbs:
1.    Menstrual cramps: herbs such as false unicorn root and cramp bark can help alleviate cramps associated with PMS and therefore can bring PMS relief. Red raspberry is another herb that can help bring menstrual cramp relief. Such herbs can be particularly helpful for women who suffer from dysmenorrhea. Jatamansi is another herb that is especially helpful for this condition.
2.    Heavy periods: yarrow, nettles and shepherd's purse help to reduce heavy bleeding by directing the flow of blood away from the pelvis. Women who suffer from chronically heavy menstruation, known as menorrhagia, can particularly benefit from the healing properties of such herbs.
3.    Irregular periods: for women who experience irregular periods, a condition whose medical name is oligomenorrhea, there are a variety of Chinese herbs which can help to regulate their menstruation cycle. Such herbs include jatamansi, blue cohosh, ginger and skullcap. Parsley can also stimulate irregular or absent periods.

Menstrual Problems Diet:
When you suffer from certain menstrual problems, you may need to change your diet to include certain kinds of food to increase the amount of nutrients that may be lacking from your system. Here are some dietary advices you might want to try:
1.    To help you experience more normal menstrual periods, you may need to eat more vegetables and fruits and less protein or meat products. Some people switch to a diet that consists mostly of vegetables, and they have found that their periods are less problematic than when they were consuming large amounts of meat.
2.    Try to cut out junk food from your menu. Junk food contains high levels of salt, sugar, and fats and these are not good for your body and may just bring about symptoms of PMS and other menstrual problems.
3.    Keep yourself well hydrated by drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day. This will help with a healthier body that will have less problems with menstruation.
4.    When you are having menstrual problems, you may need to eliminate caffeine from your diet.
5.    Coffee, tea, chocolates, and soft drinks should be avoided.
6.    You should try to maintain a healthy weight by not overeating since obesity and being overweight can also cause menstrual problems.
