What been one of the most sought after psychic abilities since the dawn of time? Without a doubt, the desire to speak with those from the spirit world would be the answer. The desire to talk with the dead has guided many to either employ tools to speak to those in the afterlife or to seek out mediums that claim the ability to perform such tasks. The notion that one can speak to the departed has not abated and many will clearly point out that the desire to communicate with the dead remains a desire on the part of many with great consistency. In other words, it may have started since the dawn of time but unlike other interests in psychic phenomena, it has never dulled. Well, this might not be the case in all scenarios. Their motivations for taking part in séances or other such communicative methods will likely be little more than the very simple desire to speak with a long lost loved one.

Why is this so? The answer is rather mundane: they miss the person.

Among the most legendary tales of a person seeking to reconnect with the dearly departed would be that of the famous escape artist Harry Houdini. Houdini had great love for his mother and when she passed away, he was left very lonely and heartbroken. He began to perform research into the subject of spiritualism because be had a strong desire to seek out those who could sincerely help him converse with his mother in the afterlife.

Houdini's attempts to do this can be dubbed somewhat of a mixed bag of results. However, the publicity garnered from his journey became international news. Based on his attempts, more and more people began to take on the task of conversing with the dead…or at least attempting to.

There will, however, be ethical questions regarding the contacting of spirits and those that live in the great beyond. Such actions fall dangerously close to the territory of "That which man was not meant to know." Answering questions regarding whether or not such attempts are ethical will need to be left to those attempting the process. Only they can answer the question as to whether or not it is.

One thing that is for sure – the popularity of spiritualism and seeking to contact those in the afterlife will never wane. It is simply human nature to explore.
