Chaos Magic And The Occult

Chaos magic school of modern magical tradition, which emphasizes a pragmatic use of belief systems and create new and innovative methods.

While there are several techniques unique to chaos magic (such as some forms of Sigil Magic), the magic of chaos, often highly individualistic and takes a liberal from other belief systems, because of the chaos, magic, having a central conviction that faith is a tool. Some common sources of inspiration include such diverse fields as science fiction, scientific theories, the traditional ceremonial magic, neoshamanism, Eastern philosophy, world religions, as well as individual experiments. Despite tremendous individual variation, chaos magicians (or "chaotes") often work with chaotic and humorous paradigms, such as the worship Hundun from Taoism or Eris from Discordianism. Some magicians also use the chaos of psychedelic drugs in such methods as psychedelic semenancy or chemognosticism.

This magical discipline was first formulated in West Yorkshire, England, in 1970. Using different methodologies, often reminiscent of Western ceremonial magic or neoshamanism, many practitioners believe they can change their subjective experience and objective reality, even though some chaos magicians dispute that magic occurs through paranormal means.

Meeting Peter J. Carroll and Ray Sherwin in Deptford in 1976 was claimed as the birthplace of chaos, magic, and in 1978 Carroll and Sherwin founded the Illuminates in Thanateros (IOT), the magic of chaos organization. Liber Null (1978) Peter J. Carroll further development of this new, experimental look at the magic. This book and Psychonaut Carroll (1981) remain important sources.

Visionary artist and mystic of Austin Osman Spare, who was briefly a member of the Aleister Crowley but then broke with him to work independently, largely as a source of chaos magic theory and practice. In particular, Spare developed the use of seals and the use of gnosis to empower these. Most of the major works Sigil repeats spare equipment, including construction of the phrase in detail magical intent, the elimination of duplicate letters, art recombination of the remaining letters to form Sigil. Although Spare died before chaos magic emerged, many consider him the father of chaos magic because of his rejection of traditional magical systems in favor of the method based on gnosis.

After the death of a spare, magicians continued to experiment outside of traditional magical orders. In addition to working spare, this experiment is the result of many factors, including the counterculture of the 1960's and early 1970's, the wide publication of information about magic magicians such as Aleister Crowley and Israel Regardie, the influence of Discordianism and Robert Anton Wilson, as well as Popularization of magic Vicky.
