Cardiff Bay Attractions Offer History, Culture, Art

Cardiff is the capital city of Wales, and the metropolis and surrounding county is Wales' main cultural, commercial and sports region. The Cardiff Castle and other historical sites are fascinating and the Cardiff City Centre has much to see and do, including the Cemetery Walk winding for nearly four kilometres through the City Centre. Still, those who stay in Cardiff hotels near the newly renovated waterfront area of Cardiff Bay may find more attractions they enjoy than they have time to visit. Some examples of what The Bay has to offer are found below:

Cardiff Bay Wetlands

This wetlands area is a protected spot for fish, birds and animals. A floating boom guards this natural habitat. When the levels of the Rivers Taff and Ely rise, the boom will keep debris from floating into the wetlands and damaging the habitat. People can visit the wetlands via a footpath that follows from the Yacht Club on the River Taff to the St. David's Hotel. A boardwalk from the footpath allows another view of the schools of fish and the wildlife. Walking along the Wetlands is a good time to bring a camera.

Cardiff International White Water

Opened in 2010, this new facility, part of the Cardiff International Sports Village which has a pool and an ice-skating rink, is located close to the Rivers Taff and Ely and provides a marvellous venue for active sports like white water rafting, rock climbing, canoeing. The cafe', Wi-Fi and sports shop is open every day and the sports facilities can be rented for parties and sport events. Paddle School courses help people improve their canoeing technique and work toward the awards of the British Canoe Union.

Mermaid Quay

Directly on The Bay, Mermaid Quay is the place for many wonderful venues of food and drink, fantastic shopping and much more. People can stroll about the decks, sip some tea outside one of the many restaurants and get their fill of boutiques.

Norwegian Church

This historic building was a Norwegian place of worship from 1868 for Norwegian expatriates and sailors. For many years, Cardiff port was the site of a major operation centre for Norwegian merchant and commercial fleet. Today, the church is used as a centre for the arts where small, intimate performances and musical events happen.

Wales Millennium Centre

Covering about five acres of land, the centre holds events like opera, musicals and dance. Many special, pop culture events also take place here. A spectacular modern building, the Centre dominates The Bay. The complex has two small halls and one large theatre, restaurants, shops and more.
