Reviewing the GD880 Mini from LG
LG have announced the release of their latest handset, the GD880 Mini. In response to the public who demanded a more compact, user friendly handset, the resulting effort is arguably LG's most mature looking handset to date. As you would expect from the name, the LG GD880 Mini is a compact handset. Opting to steer away from the tiny clamshell designs and produce a phone more similar to the larger touchscreen phones has proven a wise choice. Despite its small overall dimensions, the manafacturers have still managed to incorporate a 3.2" screen into the unit, and not just any old screen either. Boasting a resolution of 480 x 854, the screen is amongst the highest resolutions available, also displaying a colour palette of 252k. In terms of the all important figures, the phone measures just 102 x 47.6 x 10.6mm and weighs in at a very impressive 99 grammes. The screen is also constructed form a scratch resistant glass, a wise choice considering the handsets often end up in pockets and bags with keys and coins etc. Looking away from the screen and the simplicity of the handset is emphasised by the fact that their are no buttons on the front, just an earpiece and a video call camera. A glance around the sides and you will find the customary volume rocker along with a camera buton, microSD slot, 3.5mm jack plug, micro USB and a lock key. Overall the design is very neat, a notable lack of curves with straight lines and right angles being very much the theme. The camera function on the LG GD880 Mini is fairly impressive. Capable of capturing images in a resolution of 2560 x 1920, which equates to over 5 million pixels, which in fairness has now become pretty much the industry standard. A range of neat features assists the camera facility including face and smile detection, geo-tagging and image stazilisation, handy for taking shots whilst moving or very close up. Video footage can also be shot at a rate of 30 frames per second in VGA quality. The 880 Mini comes with 330 MB of internal memory, but of course this can be boosted by up to 32GB by purchasing an additional microSD card. In terms of connectivity the phone is well supported, with WiFI, 3G and EDGE all featured, meaning the user can be constantly up to date with happening on the web, particularly social networking sites, very important to the modern youth market. The LG GD880 Mini is a lovely looking handset. Its compact size immeadiately appeals, but unlike a lot of its competitors there has been no sacrifice in terms of features to achieve this. Thus a great screen and camera are amongst the weapons in its armoury. All in all a stylish and potentially very successful handset from LG. The LG GD880 Mini and the HTC G1 White are coming soon.
