The Rich History of Piggy Banks

Piggy banks made of pottery have been used since the seventeenth century. The term "piggy" is derived from the word "pygg" which refer to orange clay that was used to make pots, jars, and cups during the Middle Ages. The pygg jar was used to keep a collection of family money. "Piggy" also originates from the Old English word "picga" evolving into Middle English term "pigge" which refers to the animal.
