Muggle Quidditch - Have You Got Game?

If you have followed the Harry Potter series, the word Quidditch is probably quite familiar. It is a sport played on brooms resembling a combination of basketball and football. A new sport has begun, starting at Middlebury College in Vermont called Muggle Quidditch. The difference is it does not involve magic or flying broomsticks and the game is played with both feet on the ground.

Muggle Quidditch is played by two teams composed of 7 players each plus 1 seeker whose task it is to capture the snitch. Apart from this, there has to be 3 chasers for each team who shoots the quaffle which can be any ordinary ball into one of the three hoops on the opponents' side to score. Two beaters are also chosen for each team whose task is to throw bludgers or foam balls at the opposing team. To block the opponents' attempt to score, a keeper is assigned for each team. The snitch is a track runner usually dressed in gold who runs around the field trying not to get caught by anyone. There are several variations on this theme. The runner can have a hat or flag that represents the snitch and must be snatched off him by the seeker. Or a small ball, such as a tennis ball can be hid prior to the game in a designated area and the seekers from each team must search to find it. The game ends when a snitch is caught and the points are tallied. The team with the highest points wins. The quaffle can be a soccer ball or for a greater challenge use a frisbee. The Bludgers can be hit towards opponents with a short back, tennis racket or shortened hockey stick.

Playing Muggle Quidditch is truly challenging and enjoyable. It has been increasingly popular not only to Harry Potter fans, but to all the muggles out there as well.
