Fossil Feud
Mary Anning
Mary Anning was one of the most famous fossil hunters of the 19th century. She was born in 1799 and lived in Lyme Regis on the South coast of England, an area that is today known as the "Jurassic Coast".
At the age of 12, Anning made her most famous discovery - that of a complete fossilized Ichthyosaur skeleton. At first, she just found the skull of the animal, but after a storm washed away part of a nearby cliff, the rest of she discovered the rest of the animal. This was a remarkable find, because although Ichthyosaur fragments had been known since at least 1699, it was the first time that a complete skeleton had been found, and thus a complete picture of the animal could be formed. Today, this particular fossil is located in the Natural History Museum in London.
Later in life Anning continued to search for fossils, and made further discoveries. The most important of these were two further species of Ichthyosaur, a Plesiosaur which she found in 1821, and a Pterosaur which should found in 1828. The latter was particularly remarkable since it was the first complete skeleton of a Pterosaur, and also the first Pterosaur found anywhere other than in Germany.
As a result of her work, Mary Anning was granted an annuity by the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and a honorary membership (as a woman she was not eligible for normal membership) of the Geological Society of London. She died aged just 47, of breat cancer, and was commemorated by a stained-glass window in the church of St Michael the Archangel in Lyme Regis.
