Why Green Lipped Mussel Asthma Treatment Works

As anyone who suffers from it knows, asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that makes breathing very difficult. During an asthma attack, the airways to the lungs become inflamed making them swollen and sensitive. The trigger is often the inhalation of allergens, such as pollen.

It included 40 patients with mild atopic asthma (that is, asthma triggered by exposure to an allergen).  The results showed notable improvements in daytime wheeze, morning Peak Expiratory Flow (how fast the air comes out of the lungs), and the amount of exhaled hydrogen peroxide (considered to be a non-direct marker of oxidative stress and airway inflammation in asthmatic patients).

These days, green lipped mussel extract is widely available as supplement, in both powder and oil form. One of the most important things to look at is the manufacturing process. This is because green lipped mussels lose their nutrients when they're heated (many companies steam open their shells to get the meat out), frozen, or have the oil extracted from them.
