The Roadfood Festival: Free French Quarter Fun
(Photo Credit: New Orleans Roadfood Festival)
If you find yourself in the French Quarter this weekend, you are sure to run into the New Orleans Roadfood Festival. This fun, free festival features over 50 fantastic restaurants from all over the country. Yup, that's right, the Roadfood Festival highlights and celebrates great roadfood from across the country, not just the food found in Southeast Louisiana.
Consuming three blocks of Royal Street and making special appearances at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum (SoFAB) and on Bourbon Street, the Roadfood Festival is quite the sprawling event.

The Roadfood Festival starts out with a kick-off party at SoFAB and features oysters on the half shell, hot cracklin', hors d'oeuvres and an open bar featuring local cocktails. Guests at the kick-off party also get to witness the presentation of the Blue Plate Award and check out the amazing collection at SoFAB.
It is worth noting that while the rest of the fest is free, you have to purchase tickets for the kick-off party, which you can do here.
Great Food all Weekend Long
Saturday and Sunday, the events move down to the heart of the Quarter on the 300-600 blocks of Royal Street, and feature some amazing restaurants. You can find New Orleans classics from Antoine's, kicking fried chicken from Willie Mae's Scotch House, amazing sausage from Vaucresson, or venture into one of the hottest places around town (and a personal favorite), Boucherie.

And don't worry, dessert will make an appearance too, with Plum Street Snoballs, La Divina and others making an appearance.
Need a little something to wash it all down? The fine folks from the Tennessee Williams Festival will be slinging a classic Southern cocktail, the mint julep.
Can't get into the mint julep without the Kentucky Derby? Beers and soft drinks will be on hand to make sure you keep your eating machine well hydrated (or lubricated).
World's Longest Oyster Po-boy
If all that is too mainstream for you, you're still in luck. The Roadfood Festival is your chance to check out the world's longest oyster po-boy. Over 20 feet of fried deliciousness that is free to all comers once the record breaker is finished.

Sweet tooth aching? Then you'll need to line up for the beignet eating contest on Sunday! Watch New Orleans' Finest (the NOPD) take on New Orleans' Bravest (the NOFD) in a truly New Orleans show down or, if you think you're up to the task, sign up to join in the fun.
[Best TV salesman voice] But wait, there's more!
Besides being free, featuring over 50 great places and being smack in the middle of the French Quarter (on what looks to be an amazing weekend), the Roadfood Festival helps an amazing cause! Café Reconcile is the non-profit partner of the Roadfood Festival, to learn more about Café Reconcile, click here or stop by their booth and taste their magic in action.

Both are New Orleanians with an intense love for the city, food, drink, fun and the Saints. A rarely separated tandem, $1.25 and Cupcake love to travel across the greater New Orleans area in search of tasty dishes, funky bars, unique drinks and great music. When $1.25 and Cupcake aren't out enjoying all of what New Orleans has to offer, they're likely to be found in the kitchen trying out a new recipe or making one up on the spot.
As Cupcake says, "like any good New Orleanians, we love our food, and if we're not planning one meal, we're eating it, and we're probably already talking about what we're going to have for the next one."
