Can a sponge absorb the force felt when a ball is dropped on the floor?

Hi,
Doing an investigative lab trying to determine whether the thickness of a sponge can affect the force felt by the ground when a ball is dropped on the floor. Now I can't seem to think of a logical hypothesis that would explain what would happen. Any help?

If the ball was stationary on the sponge, then the floor would just feel the weight of the ball and the sponge added together.

Now if the ball was dropped on the sponge, the effect of the sponge would be to decelerate the ball. This deceleration requires the sponge to exert a force on the ball and bring it to a stop.

However using Newton’s third law: ‘To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.’ The sponge will feel an equal and opposite downward force from the ball.

This downward force will push through the sponge to the floor. So to begin with the floor will feel a big force as the ball hits the sponge, then when the ball stops the force will drop to just the weight of the ball. (Note that for the total force exerted on the floor you will have to add the weight of the sponge to this as well.)

If the sponge is hard (thin) the ball will stop quickly, a fast deceleration. Now the faster the deceleration, the more force is needed. So there will be a big force for a short time.

If the sponge is soft (thick) it will take longer to stop the ball, a slow deceleration. So there will be a smaller force for a longer time.

Possible complications: If the ball bounces you will get the force several times until the ball stops bouncing. Bouncing is less likely on a very soft sponge. I am also ignoring the effects of vibrations in the sponge as these are likely to be small.

Hope this helps.

Close Up Magician Florida

It has become a trend to arrange for magical entertainment at many of the popular events. Magic that happens in front of the audience is called close up magic. Close up magic can be felt as well as touched and not just seen. This magic is different from cabaret magic and stage magic and it is the intimacy which makes this magic such a unique form of entertainment. As compared to almost any other form of entertainment, close magic involves more participation from the audience. When the magician Florida performs, the audience is directly involved with the performance as the audience is right next to the magician.

Types of props used:

A number of props are used by magicians in close up magic. Rope, sponge balls, coins, playing cards are only some of the relatively small props used by the close up magician Florida. Magicians often use objects like glasses, napkins etc. found on the tables at banquets and while performing in the restaurants. Close up magicians, just like the stage magicians do the same kind of tricks or what we prefer to call - magic!

By using different props they make impossible things happen, like the props appear, change form, break, get restored again, levitate, penetrate other objects etc. The most astonishing part of close up magic is that everything happens right there, in front of the audience! Many a times the magician asks people in the audience to actually hold different props while performing magic.

Effects of close up magic:

There are a number of common close up effects of this magic. The main aim of a good magician is to try to entertain the audience to the maximum. ‘Trick' is a word that magician Orlando tends to avoid as the word just suggests that he is trying to get ‘clever'. There is one magic act with paying cards called the ‘Ambitious Card' where the card that is chosen keeps rising to the top of the deck of cards, even if it gets lost in the middle of the pack and that too without the cards being cut or shuffled.

Balls disappear and appear in the ‘Sponge Balls' magic. Someone from the audience is generally involved in the magic and the sponge balls magically appear and disappear and also keep multiplying in the hands of the person involved in the magic performance. If you are willing to put in some effort, magic effects like these are not at all difficult to learn too.

If you want to know, how to perform close up magic or even if you want to buy standard routines and props, it is possible for anyone to find books or DVDs, or search the Internet for details. The presentation used in the magic is what makes the magician orlando better than any other. With an emphasis on entertaining the audience, a top professional magician surely creates his own unique magical style. The very act of making the seemingly impossible happen at such close range makes the act even more appealing and entertaining.
