Great Barracuda Description
Also known as: Great Barracuda, Barra, Commerson's Sea Pike, Short Barracuda
The great barracuda is a predatory fish that feeds on an assortment of prey including fish such as grouper, snapper, small tuna, jacks, mullet, herring, and anchovies. They attack their prey swiftly and unexpectedly utilizing their large gape and sharp teeth, which allows them to contend with larger fish by chopping them in half. Barracuda are largely reliant on sight to find prey and are extremely fast, reaching estimated speeds of 36 miles per hour.
The great barracuda is generally solitary, however, young barracuda typically form schools according to size and do not exceed limits within the group due to the cannibalistic instincts of the larger species.
Barracuda inhabit the warm seas and are commonly found in seagrass, mangroves, and nearshore coral reefs. Also residing in the open ocean they tend to live near the surface and avoid brackish waters. Barracuda are found in the warm and tropical regions of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Juvenile barracuda often mature in mangrove and seagrass beds, which provide cover from predators before moving to deeper reef habitats.
Spawning for the barracuda occurs in shallow water during the spring months of the year, as the ocean water begins to warm. During spawning eggs are released and fertilized in open water then dispersed by the currents.
Description:
The great barracuda has a slender, streamlined body, large mouth containing two sets of razor-sharp teeth, and a protruding lower jaw. It has a bluish gray upper body, with greenish to silver shading on its sides and a white belly. The upper body has 18-23 dark bars and the sides have black spots below the lateral line, which are a distinguishing feature of the great barracuda.
The great barracuda rarely exceeds 6.5 feet in length, with a maximum length of 10 feet and may weigh up to but generally not exceeding 110 pounds.
Range:
Western Atlantic Ocean from Massachusetts to Brazil. Also found in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea as well as the eastern Atlantic Ocean, Indo-Pacific, and the Red Sea.
