A Brief History of Jewelry

Some things have been present in the past is present now and will be present in the future. Jewelery is one of those things. Its form has changed no doubt, but its present tense has not changed!

Jewelery is a part of the attire meant to beautify and symbolize certain things or beliefs. It basically serves the purpose of personal ornamentation. Jewelry ranges from earrings, nose rings, gold pendant necklace, brooches, rings, bracelets and even piercings. The best thing about ornaments is that they can be made with virtually anything. One can use different metals, amalgams, precious stones, gems and even shells or pieces of wood. This choice of raw material for the product is directly dependent on the parent culture, its beliefs and the availability of the raw materials. The value and beauty of different kinds of jewelry depend on the materials with which it has been made or the intricacy of its design. Jewelry serves no other purpose other than ornamentation, adornment and beautification—thus, things like bags and belts are no more than accessories as they are both beautiful and serve a secondary purpose.

The word ‘jewelry' is coined from the word ‘jewel' which was loaned from the 13th century French word ‘jouel' which in turn was derived from the Latin word ‘jocale' (plaything). Jewelry is regarded as the most ancient form of ornamentation. An old necklace made up of shells has been found which was dated to 100,000 years by C-14 dating!

Jewelry has always served the purpose of exhibiting one's wealth and status. This piece of adornment also has been modified subtly to provide a little purpose like holding pieces of the attire or keeping the hair in a desired shape. The earliest pieces of ornaments were made with naturally occurring materials like colored or smooth stones, shells, pieces of wood, animal teeth and claws, and bones. Jewelry has also served the purpose of demarcation— say a certain section of the society from the other or separating whole social groups by showing their unique styles of adornment. As time went by man started using precious metals and gems in jewelry. Though pearl pendant necklace was quite popular after its inception it was gold jewelry which mesmerized man due to its undying luster and durability.

Man's imagination saw the division in the types of jewelry—on the basis of how they are made and for what purpose. Thus we saw the advent of art jewelry (creativity and design), costume jewelry (cheap and mass produced) and wire jewelry (made with anything durable that can be wrapped in a wire).
