Whale Shark Snorkelling

For the thrill of a lifetime why not try whale shark snorkelling on Ningaloo Reef? Ningaloo Reef is off the coast of Western Australia and is not as well known as the Great Barrier Reef, but is just as beautiful and perhaps even more pristine. Snorkelling there will allow you to see many of the wonders such as giant manta rays, dolphins, dugongs and turtles – not to mention those wonderful spotted whale sharks that the reef holds.

Ningaloo Reef extends for 260 ks along the coast and is so close to it that you can actually walk from the beach through the shallow lagoon it protects, right onto the reef and the water only comes up to your knees. There are around 500 species of tropical fish and over 200 different types of coral.

Whale sharks are not predatory like sharks. They open their mouths very wide, but not in an effort to swallow large bait. They are filter feeders – that is, they take in gulps of water and strain their food from it through their gills. Manta rays do the same. Of course whale sharks do have teeth, but not huge teeth like most sharks have. The numerous teeth of the whale sharks are less than 6mm long and form many rows.

Between April and July is the best time to go if you want to snorkel alongside whale sharks at Ningaloo. And even if you don't go snorkelling you can stand in the shallow water and watch as the fish swim between your legs. Or you can hire a kayak or join a cruise that will take you around all the sights of the reef. The best access to Ningaloo Reef at the south end is Coral Bay, while Exmouth is another entry point on the north end. Learmonth Airport is just 40 ks south of Exmouth, so you can fly up and base your holiday at Exmouth for convenience.
