Nicaraguan Spicy Comedy

Nicaraguan Spicy Comedy

In this play, the main character or the Gueguense is an old hawker travelling then throughout Central America and Mexico, and as an old fox, he managed to apparently succeed in his ‘endeavor.'

Originally, this comedy took place in a market, probably in Masaya town. The plot includes how the Gueguense, who is already a mestizo (mixed race), attained his goals. This character uses puns, dance, prance, and poetry to describe the situation of the institutions and the mestizos living under the colonial rule. The Spanish kept their exploitation and tax system in place, even in the small town of Diriamba, hometown of Gueguense, who is the voice of the underdog.

On the other hand, his stepson, Don Ambrioso, is always insulting him when addressing Spanish authorities, that is, the Bailiff and Governor. Don Ambriosio calls Gueguense a liar, fake, trickster, scoundrel, rascal, using adjectives like deceitful, phony, conceited, etc.

The Gueguense learned the proper language to address the Governor, "I pray to God to protect you, Governor Tastuanes," but he uses the then lingua franca, sexual expressions, and customs. Nowadays, the Gueguense is still in the mindset of most Nicaraguans, both in institutions and individuals, for instance, tardiness, doublespeak, carefree attitude, and old traditions that are considered to be good.

This old man or Guegue sought social mobility, and at the end of the story he managed to marry his son to the daughter of the governor representing the Spanish Crown. Also, this old hawker managed not to pay taxes, as he should, by playing tricks on the Bailiff.

Since the beginning of the play, the main character criticized the prevailing corrupt system, but he also got involved in smuggling merchandize and stealing. In spite of all his human defects, the Gueguense was more effective in dealing with the Spanish conquistadores than others Indians that fought the Spanish, by using weapons.

This picture of Nicaraguan culture is a "must read" booklet to understand the common sub-consciousness of most people in Nicaragua. This booklet containing the script in English could be found at the international airport and tourist places in Managua and Granada.
