2 Ways to Fix No Sound with Windows Vista or Windows 7

Occasionally, you will be trying to fix one problem on your computer and then accidentally cause another problem. Not long ago, my little sister was trying to free up space on her computer and we ended up having to fix a no sound problem. That's right--she accidentally deleted the wrong thing. Here's what we did.

Restore Points Offer a Quick Mulligan
One of the better aspects of Windows Vista and Windows 7 is the automatic restore point. Now Windows XP has the capability but it is not quite as good as the Vista and 7 versions. Therefore, if you own a Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer, you will love the restore point feature.

The restore points return your computer to the way it used to be before you had computer problems. So let's say you are working on the computer today and you delete the sound card driver. Oops!  Now you can only hear noises that are straight from a 1980s video arcade!

The system restore point allows you to reset the computer to where it was previously meaning you have the sound card driver (and actual sound) again. (By the way, this works great if you ever accidentally delete your recycle bin.)

To perform a system restore for Windows Vista and Windows 7:

• Click Start
• Type "System Restore" in the box
• Press Enter
• Follow the onscreen directions to restore the system to a previous day

Reinstalling the Sound Card
What system restore does, is reinstall the sound card you accidentally deleted. Of course, you do not need to do a system restore. You can just reinstall the sound card yourself.

Did you save your sound card installation CD? If so, you can use it to get your sound card back working in a flash. If not, then you will need to find the sound card's manufacturer and go to the website to download the drivers.

The majority of sound cards will have a website where you can easily download the new driver. Let's say you have a Sound Blaster card from Creative. You would go to the Creative website, navigate to the download section, choose your sound card, choose your system, and download the new driver.

To install the drivers once you download them:

• Click Start
• Type in "Device Manager"
• Press Enter, this will open Device Manager
• Scroll down to "Sound, video and game controllers"
• Click the (+) or the arrow to expand the field
• Right click your device and select update drivers

Alternatively, you can run driver update software to find, download and install the drivers for you in a couple of minutes. It is much easier and faster to do.

Keeping Your Computer Running Fast
So you have learned your lesson about deleting things you aren't sure about, but you need to know how to keep everything up-to-date and running smoothly. After all, it was the quirks that caused you to go fiddling around with your computer in the first place.

A couple of tips to keep your computer running smoothly:

• Run a registry cleaner to keep errors at bay (they slow down your computer)
• Use Windows Defrag to keep everything running quickly
• Keep your drivers up-to-date and running properly with driver update software

You would be surprised at how well these three little things will keep your computer running fast and error free.
